The Visit
I love doing school visits! It's great to see how much kids enjoy my books and to interact with them. I always find it very inspiring.Since I have done books for a wide range of ages, I am able to do programs that are appropriate for students from Preschool - 5th Grade.
The Programs
For the very youngest children, I can read All Better, which I both wrote and illustrated. It has repetitive words to facilitate reading and it's a silly story. We can also do a drawing lesson using shapes. What animals can you make with a circle and a triangle? Even the youngest students are very successful with this exercise. For K-2nd grade, I have a PowerPoint presentation of A Dark and Noisy Night. The book utilizes onomatopoeia. The children have the opportunity to read the words and make noise! I have to say that kids really like to make the noises! I will show them how a book is made, which includes rough drafts of writing and drawing through the finished product.
We will do a drawing lesson, first learning how to draw Peggy the Pig and then other animals, again with just shapes.
There will be time for questions and answers, too.
For 3rd-5th Grade, I have a PowerPoint show of The Viper. This book is suspenseful and a little bit scary but ultimately funny. It also reenforces the concept of time, both in numbers and in time passing. I will show the students a little bit about the printing process. And I will explain the different steps that go into making a book, from initial writing, rough sketches, working with an editor, book dummies, layout, a bit about the printing process and the finished product.
Then we have questions and answers. There are usually a lot of good questions. It's good to have the students prepare a bit before the visit.
We will also do a drawing lesson starting with drawing Peggy the Pig, some other animals and, perhaps, trying to illustrate a passage from a book.
